"I hold a family to be in a desperate way, when the mother can see the bottom of the pork barrel."
James Fenimore Cooper

In the popular 1863 story "The Children of the Public", Edward Everett Hale used the term pork barrel as a homely metaphor for any form of public spending to the citizenry.
We’re scraping the bottom of the Barrel here. Pork Barrel: we’re an irreverent literary magazine that focuses on the political landscape in the eyes of the people. Feel silenced? Submit to us!
First off, we disdain politicians. We also write, read, view, evaluate, critique, enjoy, despise most or all literary forms. We're not pretentious, we promise.
We want literature with passion. All forms of opinion are political - and we'd like to hear what you guys feel, and how you present it on the page. We're tired of reading our own stuff.
We're in our second year as University students, and the idea of Pork Barrel came about as we all sat sipping a 23 year old rum, appreciating the vintage in our local Wetherspoons.
To submit your work, please use the contact form at the bottom of the page or send an email to submissions@porkbarrel.co.uk using the 'Email Us' link below.
Email UsHave a coffee, and stay a while. Thanks for taking the time to visit us, and we hope you enjoy our content as much as we enjoy hearing ourselves talk.
We want the student’s voice – whatever it may be. We’re a political magazine, but that doesn’t mean we just want to hear where you are on the political spectrum; we want to hear what you feel passionate about. It could be small: a poem on the affairs at your place of learning, or larger – such as a non-fiction piece on an instance of discrimination you’ve faced. You can be serious, you can be farcical – all is welcome to submission; just be sensitive when dealing with controversial issues. We want to hear how you feel, and see how creatively you lay it out on the page.
We accept:
Everyone’s work is important to us, and we want to make sure everyone who submits gets the chance to be read. This being said, for everyone to be read fairly, there need to be some guidelines in place.
To submit a piece of your literature or visual art to us, send it using the contact form below, remembering to upload your work as an attachment.
You can alternatively send us an email to submissions@porkbarrel.co.uk, again remembering to attach your submission.
